Two years earlier, Brooke's young husband was killed in an auto accident. Now, she is raising their two small children on her own in their hometown of Smithville, Texas. Owen Saunders is the new guy in town. After his divorce, he left Austin and brought his broken heart to Smithville to restore an abandoned house. Brooke and Owen feel that they understand one another. Neither feels ready to have a romantic relationship and they enter into a platonic friendship. As their relationship grows, they learn about forgiveness and growth. As Owen rebuilds the house, will he be able to repair his broken heart?
This is a story about second chances and forgiveness. Brooke is understandably apprehensive about letting another man into her life. Not only did she lose the love of her life, but she is concerned about the effect of a relationship on her children. Meanwhile, she is learning a valuable lesson on forgiveness. Her father, who left her mother years earlier, has returned, and Brooke refuses to allow him into her life. Owen refers to himself as "damaged goods" and "a shell of a man", and does not believe his bitterness will allow him to be in a relationship again.
The House That Love Built is a contemporary fiction containing romance and mystery, while including a Christian theme. Real-life situations and characters make this a very enjoyable novel.
