About A Noble Groom
Michigan, 1880
Annalisa Werner’s hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband
failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options
to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a
husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That’ll be
enough. A marriage for love…that’s something she’s given up on.
So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.
Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany
and a former schoolteacher–or so he says. He’s looking for work and
will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.
With time running out, she accepts his help, but there’s more to this
man than he’s admitting. He’s also gentle, kind, charming–unlike any
man she’s ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the
darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

Reader review . . .
Hans Werner's mysterious death has left young Annalisa a widow with a toddler and another on the way. She has no way to provide for herself and her children, so it is imperative that she remarry as soon as possible. When a groom cannot be found among the German immigrants in her Michigan community, a letter is sent to the Old Country asking for help. When schoolteacher Carl Richards arrives, he seems to be just what Annalisa needs. But Carl has a secret that will change everything when the truth comes out.
A Noble Groom is Christian historical fiction at its best, and proof that you should not judge a book by its cover. At first glance, I feared that it was another schmaltzy, sweet romance, but after a few pages, I knew I was wrong. The characters, situations, and conflicts are, for the most part, believable. Annalisa's plight was a common one in that era, when women were thought to be second-class citizens and daughters were considered to be a burden. Many young women were married off to anyone who would have them in order for the family to have one less mouth to feed. When Annalisa is surprised to learn that love is possible within a marriage it is sad to realize that many women of that time would have been just as surprised.
A couple of small things must be mentioned. Sometimes authors do things that make me giggle, and one of them is the use of grandiose character names. I must admit that Baron von Reichart had this effect on me. Also, the storyline seemed to be tied up a little too neatly and quickly at the end. One minute the characters are in a crisis, and on the next page everything has been explained and concluded. But this is not a major criticism; on the contrary, I highly recommend this novel. The author clearly knows her subject well and has done her research. The setting, both time and place, is accurate and well-detailed. Containing romance, history, and mystery, this novel should appeal to many readers.
