SLOW COOKER ROAST BEEF WITH COCA-COLA GRAVY

SLOW COOKER ROAST BEEF WITH COCA-COLA GRAVY
Adapted from Deep South Dish

1 3-4 lb eye of round roast
1 envelope onion soup mix
1/2 tsp dried, crushed thyme
2- 12 oz. bottles of Coca-Cola imported from Mexico
1/4 c all-purpose flour
water

Place roast in slow cooker.  Sprinkle soup mix and thyme over roast.  Pour Coca-Cola around and over the roast.  Cook on Low for 7 hours.  Remove and let stand before serving.  While roast is cooling, pour drippings into a skillet.  Mix flour with enough water to thicken, and whisk into drippings.  Simmer 15 minutes, whisking frequently, until there are no lumps.  Serve gravy with roast.

If you're new here, you're probably wondering why I specified Coca-Cola from  Mexico.  If you've read my earlier posts, you may remember that I have a thing about the original formula vs. what they pass off as Coca-Cola today.  For a quick recap:  Up until the mid 80's, it was made with sugar like the good Lord intended.  Then in a major WHATTTTT???!???!? moment, they did away with it and came out with "New Coke".  No one bought it; major marketing disaster; too much pride to totally throw in the towel, and you had "New Coke" and "Coke Classic".  Supposedly "Coke Classic" was what we had always had, but if your taste buds have a memory like mine, you know the difference between corn syrup and sugar.  Not the same thing.  So, here's the deal. If you're a purist, and I am when it comes to pop (not soda, not soda pop, and certainly not soft drinks), then you have to have the REAL "Real Thing".  And the only way to get that is to buy the stuff made in Mexico.   I have heard that some stores sell a Kosher Coca-Cola made with sugar, but I haven't found it.  For a long time, I couldn't find it in Florida, but my family in Kentucky found it at Kroger.  Go figure....so, along with the Field chili roll that I miss so much, they were bringing me Coca-Cola.  But now they sell it here  at Wal-Mart, so I'm good to go.  Anyway, when I have a recipe calling for Coca-Cola, I buy it because I think it tastes better in food, as well as by itself.  Oh, and it makes a great Slushy, too.

The only way that I could figure they could improve upon Coca-Cola, one of life’s most delightful elixirs, which studies prove will heal the sick and occasionally raise the dead, is to put rum or bourbon in it. - LEWIS GRIZZARD, New York Times, Apr. 26, 1985

found you while googling a recipe for my meat with coca-cola.
just wanted to let you know that the kosher coca cola is 'seasonal'.
corn syrup is not used by jews over Pesach, passover, so about a month before that, coca-cola starts coming out with the coca cola made with real sugar. it usually has a bottle cap of a different color, (yellow has been my past experience) and should be found only in jewish areas.
PS passover usually falls around easter time, so a month before that, or a couple of weeks before, is time to start looking. hope it helps!
