The letter said he was dying, that’s all Jules Weinstein knows when she leaves her life in San Francisco and moves to New York City to be with her father. She goes for the remarkable opportunity to really know her father. She never dreamed he had liberated a concentration camp, dealt cards to Bugsy Siegel or saved the life of a Black Panther. Wings of Hope is a road trip through the memories of a man making peace with his life. Little does she know that by getting to know her father, she will find herself. While her father struggles with whether his life was meaningful, Jules discovers that her father’s last gift to her is the ability to reach for her dreams. Her journey teacher her that “the goodbye” is sometimes the most heartbreakingly beautiful part of life.

READER REVIEW
In Hilary Peak's novel "Wings of Hope", Jules Weinstein is adjusting to her new life and career in San Francisco when she receives a letter from her father in New York.  He has been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and wants her to spend his remaining time with him.  She opts to leave her life behind and spend those remaining months really getting to know her father for the first time.

This novel will connect with anyone who has lost someone they loved and realized later that there were things left unsaid or questions unanswered.  Jules has the opportunity that most people don't have, and that is to sit down with a dying relative and spend quality time and to have those conversations that we don't usually get around to having in our day-to-day lives.  It was a wonderful novel that I read in on sitting.  I could not put it down.  If you are an emotional reader, you will want to have a box of tissues handy.  But hang in there, because the understanding that Jules acquires is worth the emotion.

SPRING CLEANING BOOK GIVEAWAYS

As a book blogger/reviewer, dedicated bibliophile, and just plain serious reader, I have way too many books around here.  Therefore, it is necessary to start clearing some of these bookshelves around here.  For the next few weeks, I will be doing a couple of book giveaways a week.  The giveaways will begin each Saturday and end on Friday midnight of that week.  Unless otherwise noted, these books are my VERY CAREFULLY read review copies.  So, technically, they are used, but you can hardly tell it.  Ask anyone in my family; I'm a nut regarding the way I read books.  I try not to open them too widely,or leave them splayed open, and I never!!! fold pages down.  Yes, I have issues, but it's going to pay off for some of you. : )
