Reader review . . .
As World War II rages in Europe, a battle erupts in Boston for the custody of a small child. Lydia has raised little Nicky after the death of his mother and her friend. But his drug-addicted father has appeared on the scene, hoping to sell his child for drug money. Lydia turns to Dr. Micah Hatcher, the man for whom she secretly had feelings when serving together on Oahu. As Micah and Lydia work together to save Nicky, their feelings for one another resurface and grow. But Micah's secret mission may not leave room in his life for a family.
The author has found the perfect setting in the World War II era. The drama of the Holocaust and refugees seeking shelter in the United States is the backdrop as Lydia and Micah seek to protect Nicky from his father, who is addicted to morphine. The characters develop well throughout the novel, with all showing unexpected dimensions as the story unfolds. Although the story starts out slow and occasionally seems to be a bit predictable, the custody battle between Lydia and Nic, as well as the mission work of Micah's brother Jeremiah, grips the reader until the last page. Hopefully there is a sequel in the works, as many will want to know the future of Lydia and Micah.
Anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a strong Christian theme will appreciate this novel.
