About

Kate knows the truth is out there-but if she's right, that means a killer is out there too.
Research scientists Kate Adams and Daisy Leacock were on the brink of a breakthrough for treating depression with herbal medicine when Daisy was suddenly found dead. Kate knows that her mentor's death wasn't suicide or a careless accident-and she's determined to do whatever it takes to unearth the truth about what happened to the woman who changed her life.

Former FBI agent Tom Parker is finding it hard to adjust to life back in his hometown of Port Aster. Though an old buddy gave him a job as a detective on the local police force, not everyone approves. Tom's just trying to keep a low profile, so when Kate Adams demands he reopen the investigation into her friend's death, he knows his job is at stake. But despite his attraction to her, Tom thinks Kate may have something to hide.

As evidence mounts, a web of intrigue is woven around the sleepy town of Port Aster. Can Kate uncover the truth? Or will Tom stand in her way?

Reader review . . .

Kate Adams knows two things for sure:  the death of her friend, mentor, and colleague Daisy was not suicide, and it was not accidental.  An expert in medicinal herbs, Daisy would not have put poison leaves in her tea.  When the police call it suicide and close the case, Kate decides to investigate on her own.  Former FBI agent Tom Parker is new to the Port Aster police department and doesn't want to make waves, but he cannot quash his growing intuition that Kate is correct or his attraction to her, as well.  As Kate and Tom  uncover the secrets surrounding Daisy's death, their own secrets also begin to see the light of day.

This is a edge-of-your-seat mystery thriller, after it gets going.  The first couple of chapters failed to engage me, but after that I could not put it down.  The downside of this first book of the series is that the author introduced too many future storylines in the first installment, with no real resolution to any.  Even the main storyline of this novel is not really resolved.  But the mystery itself is good, and is not easily solved by the reader.

The characters of Tom and Kate are both interesting, with histories that promise to be explored at a later date.  Kate's tendency to jump from suspect to suspect and then just as suddenly decide to trust this possible murderer is irritating and improbable.  But, as I said, the basic story is good, and the series promises to become even more interesting with each installment.
