About the book . . .
Sometimes love takes you on an adventure completely off the map.
Mallory Hale’s life quickly veers off course when she falls
hopelessly in love. After a whirlwind romance, Mallory finds herself
leaving the bustle and action of Capitol Hill for the remote town of
Moses Lake, Texas–with husband, stepson, and a U-Haul in tow.
A sweet, mishap-filled journey into marriage, motherhood, and ranch
living ensues, and Mallory is filled with both the wonderment of love
and the insecurities of change. But what she can’t shake is the unease
she feels around her husband’s new boss, Jack West. Jack’s presence–and
his mysterious past–set her on edge, and when hints of a scandal emerge,
Mallory finds herself seeking answers . . . and comes to realize that
the middle-of-nowhere home she wasn’t sure she wanted is the very place
she’ll risk everything to save.

Reader review . . .
A whirlwind romance ensues after Mallory Hale literally falls for Daniel on Capitol Hill. Before she knows what hit her, she is married and a mother to his three-year-old. Daniel accepts a job offer from an eccentric research scientist in Texas, and the new family moves across the country to a remote community known as Moses Lake. They struggle to settle into married life while Mallory becomes increasingly suspicious of Daniel's boss and his secret past.
For the first half of the book, it was a struggle to maintain my interest, but the mystery really heats up about midway and from that point on, the difficulty lay in walking away from the book. Oddly enough, the ending fell a little flat for me and seemed a bit murky. The suspense built to a certain point, and then....last chapter wraps everything up; end of story.
The characters of Mallory and Nick are well-defined, as are Keren and Al. Jack and Mason West are never really clear, but as the mystery men of the novel, that would be appropriate. The only character who gave me a problem was Daniel. His personality, and his loyalties, seemed to be all over the place. He was a difficult character to care about. But the people of Moses Lake felt real. Having been a small-town girl for most of my life, these characters seemed almost familiar to me.
Although it is listed in the Christian fiction genre, I would label it "soft Christian". It is not a "preachy" novel, with the religious aspect consisting mostly of Mallory and Daniel attending the local church, and Mallory questioning God and wondering if her strange dreams are prophetic and from Him.
Clean, non-violent mystery; small-town, Southern setting with political/environmental overtones
